# Do Instagram click-to-message ads tell you which ad a DM came from?

Yes. When someone taps a click-to-message ad, the first message arrives with a referral that names the ad, including its ad ID and the ad title. That makes ad-driven DMs some of the easiest leads to credit, as long as your inbox saves the referral when the message comes in.

Tools connected through Meta's Messaging API receive the details with the first message: the ad ID, an optional `ref` value you can set on the ad, and the ad's title and creative.

Three things trip agencies up:

- **The referral comes once.** It's attached to the conversation when it opens, not repeated on every message. If nothing records it at that moment, it's gone from your reporting.
- **Ads Manager counts conversations, not customers.** "Messaging conversations started" tells you how many chats opened. It doesn't tell you which of those chats became a booking or a sale. That part lives in the DM thread.
- **Boosted posts and click-to-message ads are different.** Someone who sees a boosted post and then DMs from the profile arrives with no ad referral, the same as an organic DM.

For client reports, put ad-sourced leads in their own line next to organic ones. A client paying for ads wants to see what the spend brought in, separately from what the regular posting did.
