# Can you see who shared your Instagram post in a DM?

Only when they share it to you. Instagram Insights shows how many times a post was shared, but not who shared it or who they sent it to. If someone sends your own post into a DM with your account, that message arrives with the post attached, which tells you exactly what they saw.

Shares are one of the strongest signals Instagram has, and they're private by design. You get a count per post, nothing more.

The exception is useful for agencies. When a potential customer sends your client's post to the client's account ("is this still available?", "can I get this for 20 people?"), the shared post comes through with the message. Tools on Meta's Messaging API receive it as an attachment that references the post, so the lead can be linked to that post automatically.

Two practical ideas:

- **Invite it.** Captions like "send this to us with your date" turn a share into a lead with a source attached.
- **Use share counts as a clue, not a credit.** A post with high shares and a jump in DMs the same week is a good candidate when a typed DM has no source. Confirm it with the customer before you put it in a report.
