# What is an ig.me link with a ref, and why use one?

An ig.me link opens a DM with an Instagram account, and adding ?ref= with a label (for example ig.me/m/yourbrand?ref=spring-menu) passes that label along with the conversation. It's the simplest way to tag DMs that start from a link in a bio, an email, a QR code or a Linktree, where Instagram would otherwise attach no source.

Without a ref, a DM that starts from your link in bio looks the same as one typed on the profile: no source at all. With a ref, tools built on Meta's Messaging API receive the label you chose, so the conversation can be tagged automatically.

How to use them well:

- **One ref per placement.** `?ref=bio`, `?ref=newsletter-oct`, `?ref=menu-qr`. Keep letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores; Meta rejects other characters.
- **Keep a register.** A simple list of ref, where it was placed and the date. Six months later nobody remembers what `ref=promo2` meant.
- **Test it on a real phone.** Meta only passes the ref in some cases (for a brand-new conversation the account needs ice breakers set up), so send yourself a test message before printing a QR code on 500 flyers.

A ref link won't help with the most common case, someone who sees a reel and types a message from the profile. Those still need a person to confirm the source. But for every link you control, it turns a guess into a fact.
