Can you see which Instagram post someone DMed you from?

Sometimes. Instagram attaches the source when someone replies to a story, shares your post into the chat, clicks a click-to-DM ad, taps an ig.me link with a ref, or answers your private reply to their comment. When someone opens your profile and types a message, nothing is attached, so a person has to work out the post from the conversation.
The second case is the one that matters most for service businesses. Someone sees a reel, taps through to the profile and types "hi, how much for Saturday?" That message arrives as plain text. There is no post ID, no referral, nothing to match automatically.
So the reliable approach is two layers:
- Automatic for the conversations Meta gives you a signal on: story replies, shared posts, ad clicks, ref links and comment replies.
- Confirmed by a person for everything else, done when the lead comes in. Customers often give it away ("saw your reel about the menu", a screenshot, a question only one post answered).
Record which layer each link came from. When you report to a client, "14 linked automatically, 9 confirmed by our team, 8 unknown" is more believable than a single neat number.
