Why does Instagram traffic show up as Direct in Google Analytics?
By Kaitlyn Bricker · October 14, 2026
Because some Instagram visits arrive without referral information, especially from links shared in DMs, and Google Analytics counts any visit it can't attribute as Direct. Adding UTM tags to every link you control fixes the clicks, but it can't capture leads that never click at all.
Google Analytics defines Direct as visits from a saved link or a typed URL, and uses it as the bucket for anything without a source. In a 2023 SparkToro test, links shared in Instagram DMs lost their referral data roughly 30% of the time. Links clicked from public Instagram profiles usually kept it.
Worth doing:
- Tag the bio link, link stickers and any links you send in DMs with UTMs, using a distinct value per campaign.
- Don't expect it to identify individual posts. One bio link serves every post.
The bigger gap is conversations. Someone who messages and books by phone never visits the site. Count those in the inbox, not in analytics.
