How many content pillars should a social media account have?

By Kaitlyn Bricker · November 2, 2026

Three to five, scaled to posting volume rather than to how many things the business could talk about. A client posting three or four times a week rarely services more than four pillars well, since fewer than three gets repetitive and more than five usually means one or two go quiet from neglect.

The range holds up for a practical reason, not just convention: three pillars give an account enough rotation to avoid repeating itself inside the same week, and five is close to the most a normal weekly cadence can actually service. An account posting three or four times a week with six pillars on paper will, in practice, only touch three or four of them most months. The rest exist on a planning doc and nowhere else.

The number should track posting volume, not how many angles the business has. A service business with a dozen things it could post about doesn't need a dozen pillars; it needs three or four themes that group those angles into something a follower can recognize on sight. One pillar, whatever directly promotes the business, should be the smallest and most deliberately rationed of the set rather than skipped, since skipping it is how promo posts end up showing unplanned instead.

Counting pillars is the easy part. The harder question an agency actually gets asked, "is this working," isn't answered by how many pillars exist, it's answered by comparing each pillar's share of posts to its share of the leads those posts generated. That reframes the count: once a pillar's lead share consistently lags its post share, the fix usually isn't adding a new pillar, it's trimming the one that isn't earning its slot.
